Ryan Remke: When the lakes are frozen

After living in Minnesota for a while, Dad discovered that the lakes are frozen for much of the year. This was a problem. Luckily for him, there was ice fishing. Well, sort of. Dad isn’t as big of a fan of ice fishing as he is of open water fishing.

Still, however, he would go ice fishing at least once a year for the sake of bonding. Dad would take his kids to connect with his brother-in-law Barry, who is an avid ice fisherman. Working in the construction industry, he has a lot more free time, so he spends a lot of time ice fishing and doing other winter activities.

When you think of ice fishing, what do you think of? The first thing I think of is satellite TV. You too? Thought not. Barry was an ice fishing connoisseur, employing La-Z-Boy’s, an underwater camera, a bed, an oven, heat, and yes, a satellite TV in his fish house. Now that’s fishing in style. Especially when we were not only fishing, but watching shows about fishing. As the comedian Brian Regan would probably say, that’s a whole ‘nother level of lazy.

But it was a lot of fun, and it was during those times that I developed an awesome relationship with my uncle Barry. There were definitely stretches where we didn’t catch much fish, but we didn’t care. Who are we kidding, we were just there for the TV :) And the bonding of course.

When we did catch fish, we caught mainly Walleye and Northern Pike. Those two fish as well as panfish are the popular fish to ice fish for in the Midwest.

As mentioned, Barry had an underwater camera, and he also fished a lot. This made for some cool footage. Later on, when Dad was on YouTube, he saw this as an opportunity to compile some of Barry’s best videos.

Over the years, the underwater walleye video gained a lot of traction and is closing in on 10,000 views. This is the most popular video on the channel. MadDogOutdoors’ most popular video is one that Dad did not film. Nice.

Props to Barry though, he really enjoys ice fishing and MadDogOutdoors once again documents some awesome memories. I am very grateful to Barry for always opening up his doors for us to visit and enjoy some quality time together. Don’t tell, but on my favorite uncle list, he is up there!
